What are Chronic Wounds?
Wound Care at Jefferson Memorial Hospital is defined
as a chronic wound that does not heal, or at least improve
significantly, within four weeks. Current statistics conclude
that nearly 5 million Americans (2% of the US population)
are afflicted with chronic wounds.
The most common sufferers of chronic wounds are individuals with:
- Pressure ulcers
- Diabetes
- Venous insufficiency
- Arterial insufficiency
Highly Skilled Multidiscipline Wound Care Team
An integral part of the Wound Care program is the ability to call upon the expertise of general, vascular, orthopedic, and plastic surgeons, as well as podiatrists, infectious disease specialists, registered dietitian/diabetic educators, RNs, and nurse practitioners. Our RN and nurse practitioner alone offer you a combined 33 years of wound experience. Treatment begins with this specialized team's individualized assessment.

- Education - Throughout the treatment program, our staff provide patient education specifically dealing with wound care, nutrition, exercise, and prevention.
- Communication - We stress communication and follow up with the patient's primary care physician. Wound Care at JMH is in constant communication with the primary physician.
- Transportation - Free patient transportation is available through our Senior Services (VIP Care) program.
Wound Care at Jefferson Memorial Hospital offers referring physicians a comprehensive outpatient approach for their patients that can result in earlier recovery, reduced hospitalization, prevention of prolonged or permanent disability, and a high healing rate for complicated wounds.
Our Wound Care program complements your overall patient care. The patient's personal physician will continue to treat any underlying conditions and manage overall patient care. The Wound Care team will treat the chronic or non-healing wound and remain in contact with the patient's primary physician during the course of treatment-much like other medical specialties.
